The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) International Convention is set to welcome Dr. Robert Califf, Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as the keynote speaker on the event’s third day.
The selection of Dr. Califf is a testament to his remarkable career achievements, including navigating the challenges of a global pandemic, infant formula supply chain challenges, and threats to the Accelerated Approval Pathway.
Dr. Califf expected to focus on medical misinformation
One of Dr. Califf’s primary focuses has been combating medical misinformation, which he recognizes as a grave threat to human life expectancy. He intends to shed light on the serious complications that arise from the spread of misinformation in the medical field. (He spoke about this topic at the 2022 BIO International Convention, as well.)
During the May 9 episode of the I am BIO Podcast, Dr. Califf emphasized the importance of accurate information.
“Almost no one should be dying of COVID, given the protection that can be afforded,” he said. He highlighted the significant risk reduction provided by vaccines and antivirals, estimated at 80-90%.
Dr. Califf stressed that misinformation is causing unnecessary loss of life: “When we look at the effect of misinformation in this case, it’s literally causing people to die.”
BIO International Convention will ‘stand up for science’
BIO CEO Rachel King, who also participated in the podcast, echoed Dr. Califf’s sentiments. She emphasized the need for collective action in addressing the ongoing challenge of misinformation.
